Day-By-Day: How To Care For Yourself After Unwanted News

Sooo… this past week, I finally got the results back for grad school… There were a lot of things going on in my mind. First of all, I just randomly decided to check the site to see if there were any changes to my application status. THERE WAS!!! I was shocked and surprised that the dashboard ~finally~ changed (after waiting for two months!). I must’ve held my breath as I opened the letter because the next air I exhaled, I began tearing up. Then, I saw the highly anticipated words say… “We regret to inform you…” My initial reaction was to combat the situation by thinking positive thoughts. But I decided to just accept the decision and cry it out (because it’s OKAY to CRY!!!). Then I decided to treat myself to a sweet frappuccino drink for even putting in the work for this grad program! Even though the outcome wasn’t what I wanted, I still want to REWARD my hard work! It’s okay to take care of yourself! PLEASE take care of yourself!

I am so thankful for the people in my life who are encouraging me and reminding me that everything works out in the end! It’s so crazy how many possibilities there are now that one door has closed. I’m still figuring out what my next move is, but until then, I’m going to take it day by day and continue to take care of myself.

It’s Okay To Cry to take care of yourself

Cry it out! Crying can help you feel better. I don’t know who needs to hear it, but it’s okay to cry it out.

Go Outside

Go outdoors and soak in the sun. Bike rides, walks around the neighborhood, and going to a local park can clear your mind and gain a new perspective.

Talk It Out

Find your support system and reach out for help. Sometimes having a listening ear can feel validating and gain a new perspective.

Journal

Writing down all the thoughts in your mind can help you process, understand, and validate how you are feeling. There is a sense of clarity once the confusing thoughts that were bubbling around in your mind are written down on paper (or typed digitally).

Treat Yourself

Like I mentioned before, I took myself out to get a sweet frappuccino drink to reward myself for working so hard. I also binge-watched “Big Time Rush” on Netflix because why not? LOL. Here’s to celebrating a “loss” as a “gain” for new possibilities now.
