I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I began my photography journey! I am so thankful that I am still so passionate and able to keep up with this hobby over the years. 🤯 Who would’ve thought the freshman in high school playing with black-and-white film would continue to be taking photos 10 years later?! Take a journey down memory lane with me.
High School
High school was the catalyst for my photography career. I’ve always been interested in photography and played around with my family’s little point-and-shoot camera. As I was starting my high school career, I decided to take up photography class… the BEST decision I’ve ever made! I was soo lucky to have the AMAZING Mama B as my teacher for Photography 1 class.
In Photo 1, we were introduced to the black-and-white film camera. I wasn’t expecting to work with the film medium, but it was a great starting point in working with manual exposures. If you ever want to learn the art of photography, work with manual exposure and film. It forces you to take careful and controlled shots.
Over the years, we got to work with different mediums of printing and creating photos. We moved more into digital photography. One of my favorite projects was the “Beautiful Struggles” portfolio. For this project, I used Photoshop to create a double-exposure look. If you want to see the full portfolio, then click here.
As a way to close my high school career, we ended with a senior art show. This consisted of 50+ art pieces from over the four years in school. It ranges from the “Beautiful Struggles” portfolio, altered books, etched prints, and other mediums. For more insight into the art show, take a look here.
College
College was a pretty chill time. I began my photography Instagram account at the end of high school, which you can find here (😉). I also started my business and worked with some clients. During this time, I got to work with families, seniors, and friends I met at school.
One of my favorite projects during my college days was with my friend Natalie, also known as Paper Crane + Lotus. I got to play around with her beautiful jewelry for a Valentine’s Day promotion that she had. So PRETTY!!!
I also took a couple of photography/art classes while I was in college. The photography class focused on fundamentals, which was a nice review for me. I also took a media class, which was during the whole 2020 school year… craziness! I incorporated some photography into it and the portfolio can be found here.
Present Day and Beyond
In the last three years, I began pylphotographyy.com. I’ve always wanted a website to showcase my art and blog about my thoughts, so I’m thankful I get to have this platform. It’s been fun playing around with web design and experimenting with the different layouts… it’s still a work in progress, but here we are right now 🤷🏻♀️ I’m excited for what the next 10 years (and more!) will hold for me as a photographer and a creative.
