Adulting 101: I Just Graduated! Thoughts, Reflections, and What’s Next?

graduated

Hello, hello! 👋🏼 It’s been a while since I did a reflection blog post, so here I am! As you can tell by the title, I graduated with my Master’s from the School Psychology program this past May. During the pandemic, I graduated with my BA degree, which meant I didn’t really get a graduation. Now I’m here with my Master’s! Here are just some of my thoughts from the past two years and what’s to come:

Year 1

graduated

The last time I talked about school in a blog post was back in September 2022. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to get a graduate assistantship in the program. Along with my studies, I got to work part-time at school. In my first semester, I got to shadow an amazing school psychologist in a neighboring county at the high school level. I’ve always thought that I would be working with elementary school-level students, but I’m glad I got the opportunity to be at the secondary level. In my second semester, our practicum assignment was through our training clinic. During this practicum experience, we got to provide cognitive assessments to students in the community to practice our interviewing, assessment, and feedback skills.

Then we had intensive summer classes (phew!). That summer schedule was a lot to take in. Burnout was starting to creep in… Due to that, I had to learn to prioritize my tasks and take time for myself. I also had to practice setting boundaries and following through with them.

Year 2

graduated

Second year of the program was no walk in the park… once we started the semester, we were up and at ’em. We had two different practicum experience for both semesters. The first one is within the newly established training clinic. Within the clinic, I got to work with licensed psychologists within the program and provide diagnostic clarity for kiddos and families in the community. The second one is within the school system. In this practicum, I got to shadow and work with a school psychologist at one of my rival high schools. Fun fact: the school psychologist was actually my middle school school psychologist!!! What a small world!😆

Along with everything going on in the fall, we worked on securing an internship for the next school year. That internship process… phew! That really took me in for a loop. During this time, I started to doubt myself, felt not good enough, and was absolutely exhausted. But thankfully, I was able to accept an internship offer to a neighboring county! It all works out in the end! At the end of this school year, I graduated the program with my Master’s degree in School Psychology.

What’s Next?

Like I said before, I accepted an internship for the next school year. It’s kind of wild to think that I will be the one to apply all that I’ve learned from the last couple of years into practice.

Until then, I will be taking a well-deserved break from school. Now that I’ve graduated, I am planning to get around to some projects that I’ve been putting on hold for the last couple of years. Be on the lookout for some fun projects coming to you soon! 😆 Also shoutout to Dominique Clark Photography for a wonderful graduation session!
